Swag 1-Person Canvas Camping Tent

I love my swag, kept me warm and dry during an all night high country rain shower. The next night the temps dipped into the high 20’s, I was comfortable in my 20 degree sleeping bag, no condensation either night. Quick and easy to setup and takedown. It’s bulky (all swags are, I knew this already) but goes nicely on the roof rack. All in all works great for me!

Swags aren’t readily available in the United States. These are more common in Australia but this version by Kodiak Canvas is up to par. I can honestly say that I love sleeping outdoors in my Kodiak Canvas swag. I’ve spent about 40 nights in it so far and I really do love sleeping in this thing. If you are prone to claustrophobia, it may not be for you, but I wouldn’t rule it out either. I can get claustrophobic but it hasn’t been an issue for me as I usually camp in the desert during fair weather so I have the canvas outer layer pulled back to see the stars. I have slept with the canvas fully closed on a number of occasions due to rain showers. This hasn’t been an issue unless it is also hot and stifling with no airflow. It’s fairly quick to set up and even quicker to take down. The center pole is held in place by 3 Velcro tabs on my version and these don’t hold very well. These should be upgraded with a design change. I would also like to see more interior hooks, loops, & pockets for stashing and hanging up small items like headlamps. The mattress is comfortable if you are a stomach or back sleeper, but side sleepers like me need more padding. I’d like a 3” mattress option with this. I put foam camp pads under the mattress and it helps. One thing I’ve also noticed is how well you blend into the environment in this type of tent. I routinely have all sorts of wildlife moving within a few feet of my swag because they don’t know anyone or anything is inside. This swag is large enough for a full size sleeping bag, so it is plenty roomy for one. The mesh keeps out everything including gnats. Get the optional center tension pole if you plan on camping anywhere where you can’t drive stakes into the ground. If you’re on sand, you’ll need sand stakes. If you’re on rock, you can tie off to anything or use the tension pole. So far the canvas and poles are holding up well and I would replace it right away if something happened to my swag. Oh, and the carry bag isn’t big enough to store the swag with a rolled up sleeping bag inside. That’s how I like to use this swag. I keep a sleeping bag in it so I can roll everything up together, but it ends up being too big for the carry bag provided.

This is a preliminary review because I have not actually slept in it yet. I have assembled it multiple times both on the ground and on a cot, packed it up multiple times, tried it with different sleeping bags, and spent time just lying in it. I think it is great for certain purposes. Obviously, it is for car camping not backpacking. Even though it is "small" in terms of living space, it is bulky. The bulk is the main drawback. However, it appears bombproof.The poles are high quality, the bottom is tougher than the average tarp, the canvas is excellent quality, and the stitching is uniformly well done. There is definitely a premium feel to all the components. I also purchased the tensioning pole which I think should be included with the swag because everyone will want it. With that one pole, the swag is freestanding. I was skeptical about the comfort of the pad but on my cot is is very comfortable, even on my side. My XXL cot seems to be made for the swag and pairs very well (should be available as a combo). Of course, the cot further adds to the bulk of the swag. I did put a generously sized Nemo 20 degree down bag in the swag and it was great and rolled up with no problems but was really bulky. I also bought one of the Kodiak Z-Top sleeping bags, worried that it might be too large to fit. The website makes no reference to using the Z-top with the Swag. The standard size zero degree Z-top fits no problem and is very comfortable. I also purchased a top quilt but have not had a chance to add that. However, I am certain that the top quilt on top of the Z-top is a bit much for the swag - the swag would be stuffed with all the material because these bags are huge. I was able to roll the swag with the Z-top inside it but the resulting object is really big, like a 60 gallon water heater. No way that fits back in the canvas carry bag. The cinch straps are nowhere close to long enough for that combo so I added some lightweight rope to the cinch straps with knots and that works. As per the instructions, I pre-wetted the canvas with water after I set it up for the first time. The canvas is impressively waterproof! I anticipate using the swag for car camping, especially in cool weather, on the cot and covered with either a tarp or in a pop-up screen room. Can't wait for fall!

So far I have only used it 3 nights, but it has been perfect. I love how well I can regulate the inside temperature by using the various screen windows to control air flow. I'm 6'4" and I roll around in the night. This was the perfect size for me. No complaints.

Ok, listen up. I’ve spent years in the field as a military person and also enjoy my time Outdoors as a civilian. This swag tent is absolutely amazing. The boys are jealous and I am comfortable. A few recommendations: 1. Buy an cot to put it on top. 2. Buy the Kodiak 0 degree sleeping bag - it fits perfect and let’s you sleep buck naked even when it’s about 30 degrees outside. 3- get the extra pole extension This thing breathes well, but holds heat very well and regulates quickly. Plenty of windows to vent, and it’s keeps the bugs and water out.

After spending over 45 days in this tent, it has become my go to tent for camping. Quick set up and take down, incredible durability and the most comfortable mattress I have slept on. Conditions ranged from pouring rain to below freezing temps. If you are looking for a solid one person tent look no further.

I used my Swag during my September elk season. It is extremely comfortable and very warm. It rained for three days and I never got wet. Most nights I slept with the canvas cover unzipped because the swag holds heat so well I was getting to hot at night. The foam pad is very nice to sleep on. I would recommend the swag to anyone who wants the comfort of a canvas tent without the hassle of setting it up. Using the swag for hunting helps keep you mobile and is very comfortable.
